Dubrovnik – the Pearl of the Adriatic
Dubrovnik – biser JadranaDubrovnik has preserved its finest palaces, churches and monasteries; streets and communal areas; stone walls, towers and forts, the unparalleled Stradun (The Plaza), and other traditional and spiritual places. This is a unique City, which has valued freedom above material wealth, defi ned by the Statue of 1272 and recognized by its flag of St Blaise borne over the world’s oceans. It has always been its own master, untouchable and defiant and beautiful under the eternal protection of its patron saint, St. Blaise. Excellent writers were born and worked here: Marin Držić, the author of splendid comedies; Ivan Gunduli. The “poet of freedom”; ingenious astronomer and mathematician Ruđer Bošković; Marin Getaldić, “a devil in mathematics, and angel in the heart”; Miho Pracat, a seaman and donor; Nikola Božidarević, Mihajlo Hamzić, Vicko Lovrin Dobričević, all representatives of the Dubrovnik school of painting. The City has survived due to its wisdom and its skilful diplomacy; it was a strong maritime and trade force in the 16th century, and today, it is a tourist destination, celebrated all over the world.

Arboretum in Trsteno
Arboretum u TrstenomuTen kilometres from Slano, in the direction of Dubrovnik, lies Trsteno where the Arboretum was founded out of the estate of the family of Ivan Gučetić in 1948.

Ston and Mali Ston
Mali StonTwenty minutes’ drive West of Slano, one arrives in Ston and Mali Ston, two small towns built to an agreed plan, and connected by 5.5 kilometre long walls fortifi

state. The salt produced in Ston is renowned throughout the world..

The Island of Mljet
MljetAccording to the British Time magazine, Mljet belongs to the ten most beautiful islands in the world and is the only European island in that group. This is an island of special
features and contrasts whose north-western part is a National Park. It has a unique natural beauty, centuries-old pine forests, large and small lakes and a cultural and
a historic heritage – the magnifi cent ancient palace and the 12th century Benedictine monastery are on the islet of St Mary. This greenest of Croatian islands, ancient Melita, has hosted visitors from mythology and history, Odysseus and the nymph Calypso, the Apostle Paul, the poet Oppian, the Roman Emperor Augustus, Dubrovnik noblemen, the Benedictines, and many others who sailed to its shores.
Mljet is well-known for its cultural heritage, picturesque folk costumes, handicrafts, folk dances and original folk melos.

The Winegrowing Area of Pelješac
Vinorodno područje PelješcaVines have grown here for 2000 years. The fertile Pelješac vineyards yield high quality red wines, the famous Dingač, Postup and Plavac, appreciated and in demand all over the world. Each vine is nurtured with the love and care of man, the strength of the
Pelješac soil and the warmth of its sunshine. Potomje is the traditional centre of wine production, especially the sunny slopes of Dingač and Postup..

The Island of Korcula
Otok KorčulaFrom the quay in Orebić on the peninsula of Pelješac, the ferry takes you to the island of Korčla, the ancient Korkyra Melaina, or Corcyra Nigra – Black Korčula.
Situated in the Pelješac Channel, the island of Korčula, with a main town of the same name, has preserved many buildings and has a valuable cultural heritage and a
long maritime, shipbuilding and stone-quarrying tradition. Korčula is a picturesque Mediterranean town of narrow streets, valuable churches, magnifi cent palaces and mansions and is the putative native town of the famous world traveller Marko Polo. It also offers the chivalrous Moreška sword-dance and is a celebrated tourist destination.

The Neretva Delta
Delta NeretveThe delta of the River Neretva is a fertile valley with plantations of mandarin and other fruit. Vegetables are widely grown here and extensive bird-life inhabits its irrigated
fi elds. Tourists enjoy delicious meals, safaris in trupice, traditional boats of the Neretva Delta and viewing the particularly attractive traditional boat race called Maraton
lađa. Equally interesting are visits to the Ornithological Museum in Metković and the Narona Archaeological Museum in Vid.

  • The History of the Dubrovnik Coast
Supposed remains from the Neolithic period have not yet been found within the municipal boundaries of the Dubrovnik Coast. The possible Neolithic locationof Špilja, to the west of the village of Đonta Doli will probably determine the ancient history of the area.
